A significant milestone in the course of the U.S. Navy, the military and the nation will see major attention in 2017 and 2018 – the 100th anniversary of the first woman to enlist in any of the U.S. armed forces. On March 17, 1917, Loretta Perfectus Walsh engaged in a four-year enlistment in the U.S. Navy, becoming the first woman to serve in any of the armed services in a non-nurse occupation. In the 100 years since, countless women have served with honor, bravery, and determination.
Women in the Armed Forces Anniversary & Commemorative Publication
Leading military publisher Faircount is collaborating with the Naval History and Heritage Command to produce a special commemorative edition commemorating the anniversary. Entitled A Century of Service: Women in the Armed Forces, the publication will trace the historic timeline of women’s important role in a century of the nation’s defense while examining the current climate of optimism and the future prospects as women’s roles in the military mature and evolve.
The publication will include messages of congratulations, thoughts, and experiences of VIPs as they relate to the past, current, and future roles, impact, and importance of women in the U.S. armed forces, our nation, and the rest of the world. Some of those VIPs include the first woman in U.S. military and uniformed service history to achieve four-star officer rank, General (Ret) Ann Dunwoody, U.S. Army; the first female four-star general in the Air Force, General (Ret) Janet C. Wolfenbarger, USAF, and others yet to be confirmed.

- The publication will see extensive nationwide distribution to senior leadership and personnel throughout the Department of Defense, the Department of Veterans Affairs, civilian federal agencies, national and state-level veterans service organizations, and key organizations serving women.
